The Division of Student Affairs at Loyola Marymount University received impressive honors at the JASPA 5-Year Institute in San Francisco this summer. LMU staff and programs took top awards for their contributions to not only the university, but to the field of student affairs.
LMU CARES received the Outstanding Campus Program or Initiative Award in Jesuit Student Affairs. LMU Campus Awareness Resource Education Services (CARES), which is under the direction of Briana Maturi, provides education to the campus community about resources, support and policies at the university regarding sexual and interpersonal misconduct and prevention.
Senior Vice President for Student Affairs Dr. Lane Bove was honored with JASPA’s most prestigious award — the Rev. Victor R. Yanitelli, S.J. Award.
The award is given in recognition of outstanding service to student affairs work in Jesuit and Catholic higher education, distinguished by a long-term commitment and support of Jesuit values to the campus, the profession and the Association.
The award winner is a person who may be fairly characterized as the servant/leader, in the tradition of Fr. Yanitelli.
Dr. Bove is the first person from LMU to receive this distinguished honor, which was first awarded to Rev. Yanitelli in 1979. Having begun her career as Senior Vice President for Student Affairs at LMU in 1987, Dr. Bove continues to be passionately involved in the education that occurs outside the classroom enhancing students’ engagement in the full collegiate experience.
Marshall Sauceda was posthumously honored with the Outstanding Commitment to Diversity and Social Justice Award. Sauceda served as Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at Loyola Marymount University until his retirement in fall 2014.
A champion of interculturalism and social justice, he brought the Upward Bound program to LMU and most recently advised and mentored the Latino Business Student Association and Latino Student Union.
The JASPA 5-Year Institute, which took place from July 12-15 at the University of San Francisco, is one of the signature events of the Jesuit Association of Student Personnel Administrators.
It provides the opportunity for higher education professionals to engage more deeply with the shared Ignatian mission and to discuss current topics in higher education student affairs.
