The Los Angeles Loyolan, LMU’s student-run newspaper, recently received the Davis L. Adams Apple awards from the College Media Association. The award named the publication the “Best Newspaper” among all four-year midsized universities during the CMA’s 2019 March conference in New York City.
Kellie Chudinski, former Editor-In-Chief of the Los Angeles Loyolan, says winning the award came as a surprise to The Loyolan team. “It was really exciting, and our staff was pretty surprised to be in first place among so many other colleges,” says Chudinski. “When we saw we had won, everyone at the conference came running over to celebrate.”
Established in 1954, The College Media Association works to provide education and resources for collegiate media sources across the country. With 700 advisors coast-to-coast, they hold conferences and workshops for students on how to best bring important news to their campus communities. LMU’s victory this year marks the third time since 2005 the paper has won the Apple award. Chudinski says,
“I’m really proud of the team, I think it shows we are truly moving in the right direction.”
Current editor-in-chief Jacob Corblatt says to receive such an honor from the CMA means a great deal to both the students working at the newspaper, but it doesn’t mean the hard work is over. “There is always room to improve,” says Cornblatt. “It’s really about implementing and using what we learn at these conferences to continue doing the best work we can.”
For both Chudinski and Cornblatt, as well as the entire staff of The Loyolan, the Apple award shows how this team is helping to inform and represent LMU’s diverse campus. We want to encourage a community that’s about dialoguing and using our voices when we ought to,” said Chudinski, “but mostly using the rights that are afforded to us here at LMU to make a bigger impact.”
The Loyolan has been the chief on-campus newspaper for nearly a decade. Weekly editions of the paper can be found in-print at a variety of on-campus rack locations for no charge. The publication can also be found online at its website: LALoyolan.com. The office of the Loyolan is located on the second floor of Del Rey Theatre.
