From a community garden and free reusable water bottles to solar-powered rooftops, Student Housing has again received recognition for its sustainability efforts on Loyola Marymount University’s beautiful campus.

Student Housing‘s residential recycling project has received CalRecycle’s Beverage Container Recycling Grant for 2016-17. It is the third time Student Housing has received the grant, which totals $67,000.

With the grant, Student Housing will be able to provide brand new recycling containers in apartments and suite-style buildings, as well as extend the composting program to all apartments, according to Trevor Wiseman, associate director of Resident Services.

Complete with its very own on-campus recycling center, LMU has been a frontrunner among college campuses in its efforts to reduce waste output. In the 2015 and 2016 Recycle Mania tournament, a competition among American and Canadian colleges to promote trash-reduction programs, LMU placed fourth overall and won first place in many specific divisions.

“We understand that we have a social responsibility to do everything in our power to reduce our waste and carbon footprint,” says Wiseman . “LMU and Student Housing are committed to being a leader in this area.”

Wiseman also notes the importance of the grant in achieving the goals of LMU’s 10-year Sustainability Strategic Plan, which defines itself as “strengthening the university’s commitment to stewardship, ethical sustainability, environmental justice and human resilience.”

Apart from keeping an eye out for new-and-improved recycling containers around campus, Wiseman says LMU students are urged to take part in Student Housing’s new campaign “Sustainable Living in Lion Nation.” The program aims to teach students how to live eco-friendly lives on and off the bluff.
