Looking for ways you can serve or take action in your community during Day of Action this Saturday, Oct. 10? Here are 12 ways you can get involved in your community and take action, including virtual and remote options.
1. Make Calls for LMU Voting Phone Bank: Join LMU students and volunteer for the LMU Voting Phone Bank where students will be calling students to ask them to sign-up for TurboVote.
2. Be My Eyes: This is a free mobile app that connects blind and low-vision individuals with sighted volunteers through a live video call to help solve tasks big and small.
3. Crisis Text Line: Crisis Text Line is the free, 24/7 text line for people in crisis in the United States. The service is powered by volunteer Crisis Counselors who work remotely —anywhere with a computer and secure internet connection works.
4. Smithsonian Digital Transcription Volunteers: Become a Smithsonian Digital Volunteer and help make historical documents and biodiversity data more accessible.
5. UN Volunteers: Online volunteering allows organizations and volunteers to team up to address sustainable development challenges –anywhere in the world.
6. Translators without Borders: If you speak a second language help translate documents for nonprofits around the world.
7. #MillionMaskChallengeLA: Sew protective face masks for those who need them most – medical workers, the elderly, and more.
8. Listen to a Podcast or Watch a Documentary on Racial Justice: The Center for Service and Action has compiled a list of resources and reflections for justice, reflection and advocacy, including podcasts, documentaries and readings for the LMU community to use to expand knowledge and inspire action.
9. Call an Isolated Senior during the COVID-19 Crisis: Volunteer to be a phone-caller for Westside Pacific Villages to help them stay connected, provide social support, and a sense of companionship during this time of increased social isolation and distancing. Learn about their essential needs and work with other volunteers to help arrange meal delivery, groceries, medications, and other care packages.
10. Volunteer Virtually with Downtown Women’s Center: Our partner, Downtown Women’s Center, is looking for remote volunteers to help during COVID-19. This is the perfect opportunity to LOOPin and bring some goodness into the world!Some of their remote volunteer opportunities include: Grocery shopping for a resident, Walking a resident’s dog, Running errand for a resident, like picking up a prescription, Texting, calling, or online chatting with a resident online to keep them “company,” and Ad hoc tasks as needed (e.g. researching best prepaid phones, telecommuting software, etc.).
11. iTutors – Remote Tutoring (LAUSD): The majority of students in our iTutors program qualify for free and reduced lunch at LAUSD. Tutors have the opportunity to request which grade and subject they are most comfortable instructing. All tutoring sessions take place on Zoom or another online platform. Access to Zoom (a free account is satisfactory), a consistent time, an empathetic heart, and a desire to help are the principal requirements. We are asking for a minimum commitment of 1 hour a week.
