September is National Recovery Month, and Recovery at LMU is invites the LMU community to help celebrate and support those in recovery. LMU’s Center for Student Collegiate Recovery opened in the fall of 2019 and is located on the first floor of the Malone Student Center. This space is located in the heart of the student facilities at LMU and provides a comfortable and supportive community for students in recovery. Students are empowered to take individual responsibility for their own health and well-being while belonging to a support community.
“The Center for Student Collegiate Recovery is an important place on our campus for students in recovery who need a safe space to be in the community and get support,” shared Angela O’Malley, assistant director for student conduct and recovery. “Supporting our students in their recovery and wellness comes at such a critical time. Following a pandemic where many people spent time at home and more secluded during the past 18 months, increases addiction rates. For those in recovery, it’s important to create the opposite of addiction, which is connection and community.”
For Leoluca Cannuscio ’24, Recovery at LMU has helped him on his own path of recovery. “Being a part of Recovery at LMU means being an ally and resource for anyone who may be struggling – whether that be related to sobriety, trauma, or mental health,” said Cannuscio. “I’m on my own journey of recovery and am extremely passionate about emotional sobriety. Being a part of this community motivates me to become my best self and help others achieve their goals.”
Students can also get involved with Lions for Recovery, a registered student organization, a community of students who are within or beyond recovery. To learn more about Lions for Recovery, email lionsforrecovery@gmail.com or follow them on Instagram @lionsforrecovery.
One of the many ways students find support is through staff facilitated support groups and provide programming. The fall 2021 Recovery Support Groups meeting schedule can be found here and is listed below. All are welcome to attend all sessions.
