Meet LMU’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Student Organizations

Today is #NationalSTEMDay, and we’re introducing you to some of LMU’s student organizations that are focused on areas of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). These organizations take on a range of topics like science, engineering, math, computer science, and medical fields, all of which keep our Lions engaged in STEM activities and learning outside of the classroom. To learn more about each of these organizations or find ways to get involved, visit their LEO organization pages using the links below.

American Society of Civil Engineers
The American Society of Civil Engineers represents more than 146,000 members of the civil engineering profession in 174 countries. The LMU Student Chapter aims to build these invaluable connections at LMU through networking opportunities, informational events, and team projects.

American Society of Mechanical Engineers
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers is a nonprofit national organization with over 100,000 members across over 140 countries. The LMU student chapter strives to encourage students to collaborate with their peers by sharing skills and knowledge. Members will be exposed to professional engineering careers, learn the importance of their role engineers in society, and be aided in their academic pursuits.

Association for Computing Machinery
Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) aims to act as a society where anyone interested in computer science can network with similarly minded individuals and expose themselves to the subject of computer science regardless of major. In addition, ACM exists to provide a platform for members to become involved with internships and other activities within the computer science and technology industry.

Chemistry Society
The Chemistry Society of LMU understands and declares its purpose to be: A group of students with a common scholastic interest. Fostering the bonds among students and faculty and advocating the exposure to opportunities and resources relating to the scientific community. Striving for academic excellence and benefiting from the many enjoyments presented in life.

Emergency Medical Services
LMU EMS is a dynamic, close-knit, volunteer EMS organization. We provide emergency medical care to staff, visitors, students, and faculty on week-nights, 24 hours/day on the weekend, and all university holidays when the Student Health Center is closed. We hold recruitment twice per year, spring and fall, and are always looking for new people to join our team.

Engineering for Humanity
Engineering for Humanity is a society of professional and student engineers dedicated to servicing the local and global community.

Game Developers Club
Game Dev Club’s goal is to foster a community for those who enjoy games of any sort- video games, board games, party games, card games, role-playing games, etc. There are absolutely no requirements for joining the club other than having an appreciation for entertainment. Our weekly meetings focus on learning new ways to approach game development, whether by enhancing basic skills such as coding or more specific skills like incorporating complex themes into gameplay mechanics. We’d love to see you stop by!

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Club
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is the primary professional society of the electrical engineering profession. It has more than 330,000 members worldwide, including 52,000 student members. It publishes more than 40 technical journals and sponsors or co-sponsors more than 1,000 scientific conferences and meetings around computer engineering, computer science, and related fields. The IEEE has a student branch in every major university. At LMU, all students are encouraged to participate and learn new ways to apply their engineering knowledge.

Lions for Medicine
To provide resources for pre-medical students to improve their fields of study and prepare for medical school by attending talks given by medical students, medical school admissions directors, alumni, and professionals in the field. Resources for test preparation strategies and volunteering opportunities will also be provided. Students will become more familiar with the medical school application process, its curriculum, and the overall experience.

Loyola Marymount Aerospace Research Society
The mission of the Loyola Marymount Aerospace Research Society (LoyolaMARS) is to provide a safe and engaging experience for students to apply their engineering skills towards the development of rockets and rocket propulsion technology. In the long term, we aim to create a legacy at LMU where they will continue to build on the previous year’s knowledge to develop better rocket propulsion systems. The team emphasizes professional development and preparing students to pursue a career in the aerospace industry because, ultimately, this team is meant to build better engineers for the coming age of space exploration.

Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students
The mission of the Minority Association of Pre-Medical Students (MAPS) is to unite pre-health students from diverse backgrounds to educate, empower, and explore opportunities for students to be competitive healthcare professional applicants. We strive to address issues of healthcare disparities through service and cultural competency. MAPS represents the undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students of Student National Medical Association (SNMA). MAPS members are considered national associate members and make up about one-third of SNMA’s 5,000 members. LMU MAPS was established in 2014, with the main objective is to provide members with the tools and skills necessary to make their LMU Pre-Health experience as valuable as possible.

National Society of Black Engineers
The National Society of Black Engineers (NSBE) is a professional organization that is owned and managed by its members. With over 30,000 members worldwide, 394 active chapters, 242 collegiate, 70 professional, and 82 pre-collegiate, and six geographic regions. NSBE is one of the largest student-governed organizations based in the United States. NSBE’s mission is “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black engineers who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community.”
