For the second consecutive year, Loyola Marymount University’s Tower yearbook has been honored as the best in the country by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association.
The Tower was awarded the lone College Yearbook Gold Crown at the prestigious Columbia Scholastic Press Association (CSPA) Crown Awards on March 12 in New York City. The Gold Crown for Tower‘s 2016 edition is the fifth in the yearbook’s history and its second consecutive top honor.
At the same ceremony, LMU’s student-run news outlet The Los Angeles Loyolan was honored with a Silver Crown award in the College Hybrid News category for media that use both print and digital platforms. In 2016, the Loyolan was one of three recipients of the 2016 Gold Crown Award in the Hybrid category.
“Once again our student media staffs, under the direction of Tom Nelson, hit it out of the ballpark at the Columbia Scholastic Press Association,” says Lane Bove, LMU’s Senior Vice President for Student Affairs. “As we all know, sustainable excellence is a really difficult standard to maintain, but Tom and his student staffs have consistently obtained national recognition over the past years.”
Meanwhile, in a state-wide awards ceremony on March 4, the California College Media Association (CCMA) honored the Loyolan as best newspaper website in its category (enrollment 10,000 or less). The Loyolan also won first place for best use of social media in 2016 in its category along with multiple individual staff awards.
The judges spoke highly of The Loyolan‘s website and engaging multimedia content, as well as its up-to-date social media footprint.
“Posts were frequent and extended to give full coverage and information,” says the judges’ comments. “I love that they held an open forum. Events and discussions are a great way to inform, engage, and start discussions.”
