Pam Rector Awarded the Bonney Staff Award

Pam Rector, Center for Service and Action (CSA) director, was awarded the Barbara Bonney Staff Award at the 26^th annual Staff Service Awards Luncheon on Feb. 8, 2019. Rector is celebrating her 20^thyear of service and received multiple nominations.

“I am honored to receive this award and have been overwhelmed by the response,” said Rector. “I think more than anything my work has been made possible by the people I have been able to collaborate with because you don’t do anything by yourself. This award is a reflection about the work of the community at LMU.”

Students, staff and faculty on Interfaith Trip to Israel

The Loyola Marymount University (LMU) Campus Ministry Interfaith Pilgrimage to the Holy Land was made possible through the creative and generous spirit of Father James Erps, S.J., director of Campus Ministry at LMU. Our trip was intentionally organized and carefully planned in partnership with Campus Ministry, Jewish Student Life (Student Affairs), and the Muslim Student Association (Theology department). Months of partnership, collaboration, and many meetings, emails, and phone calls went into planning this trip. We had endless discussions about where to go, how many days to spend where, how to incorporate an equal number of holy sites for each religion, and how many students and staff should go on the pilgrimage.

Just 24-hours after ringing in the new year, a group of eight Loyola Marymount University (LMU) students set off on an inaugural pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Accompanied by professors, staff and campus ministers from different religious backgrounds, the diverse group of pilgrims represented some of the faith traditions alive at LMU including Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities.

On the morning of Jan. 19, members of the Loyola Marymount University community showed their Lion Pride at the new annual event LMU Day. Thanks to the work of passionate students, the day was devoted to promoting school spirit for LMU athletics among fans.

LMU Food Pantry First Annual Drive: “Food Builds Community”

Throughout November and December, the LMU Food Pantry stocked up for the busiest months by hosting its first-ever on-campus food drive. With the support of the community, the LMU Food Pantry collected an array of non-perishables as well as monetary donations from students and staff all over campus, helping the program to meet the needs of the student community. Donation stations and collection boxes were set up around campus and inside C-Stores, while various departments in University Hall and other student organizations like Pi Beta Phi and Sursum Corda held their own collection events for the Pantry.

LMU Students Attend Clinton Global Initiative University

From October 19-21, ten Loyola Marymount University (LMU) students attended the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) conference at the University of Chicago, where they collaborated with over 1,000 other undergraduate and graduate student leaders from around the globe in finding solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues. Each year the Center for Service and Action works with students interested in submitting projects and sponsors ten students to attend to the conference. While sharing and developing their own unique ideas for change within the LMU community, the students also heard stories of those already making strides towards a better world and engaging in conservations with experts in an array of fields.

Jennifer Mendez, a graduate student and the Administrative Coordinator for LMU’s First To Go program, was one of the attendees. In attending CGI U, she hoped to gain insight into ways LMU’s First to Go program may better serve first-generation college students at LMU and other universities.

December marks both the close of the fall semester on Loyola Marymount University’s (LMU) campus and the start of the holiday season across the globe. This year Lions had the opportunity to reflect on what they have learned this semester and to celebrate holiday cultural traditions from around the globe as a community and further develop their understanding of what it means to Become a Global Citizen and Integrate Mind Body Spirit.

“Feel Good Finals” Helps Students De-Stress During Finals at LMU Library

While it’s no secret that finals week can be a hectic five days, most students would agree that petting some furry friends or snagging a sweet treat can help to relieve the pressure of exams and deadlines. With this in mind, LMU’s William H. Hannon Library and the Fitwell Center partnered up once again to hold their bi-annual “Feel Good Finals” events in and around the library, providing those hard at work with ways big and small to relax and refresh their minds. The events included on-site massages on the third floor of the library, a cookie bar on Monday night as well as a free “Snack and Swag” cart.

On the evening of Nov. 15, 2018, Loyola Marymount University community members gathered on Alumni Mall with souvenir passports in hand as they participated in the Office of International Students and Scholar’s (OISS) annual Global Citizen Day, held in partnership with ASLMU, Study Abroad and the Center for Service and Action. This event invited the LMU community to learn about international opportunities for study and service as well as engage with diverse cultural groups on campus, promoting interculturality and global consciousness among members and developing an understanding of what it means to Become a Global Citizen.

The plaza was full of life, color and music as booths and tables lined the square. As attendees collected “stamps” from each unique “destination” around the globe, they were introduced to the diverse collection of globally-oriented organizations and programs that all have found a home in the LMU community. Among them were international students, like Abbey Grosse ‘21, a communications and public relations major from Perth, Australia, who understands her engagement with a place so far from her home country as a responsibility in creating a broader worldview.

TEDx Returns to LMU to Create Conversations

TEDx, an independently organized TED event, returned to the Loyola Marymount University campus on Saturday, October 27 to create conversations for students, faculty, staff and the local community. Over 100 attendees got to hear motivational stories and personal messages from nine speakers from a wide variety of backgrounds all “in the spirit of ideas worth spreading.”
