First Ever LMU EXP Awards Recognize Student Life Achievements

To celebrate significant contributions to student life at Loyola Marymount University, the Division of Student Affairs hosted its first ever LMU EXP Awards.

In past years, the Division of Student Affairs would recognize outstanding students, groups and organizations through multiple awards ceremonies by the Center for Service & Action, Student Leadership & Development and Campus Recreation. This year, those departments collaborated on a single event to celebrate the significant student contributions that enhanced campus life on campus.

“The LMU EXP Awards recognized our outstanding student leaders from a multitude of involvements across campus for their commitment to and embodiment of at least one of the Five Pillars of the LMU EXP,” says Caitlin Lopes, senior administrative coordinator for Student Leadership and Development.

At the 2016 LMU EXP Awards ceremony, which took place on April 19, more than 26 awards were presented to individual students, clubs, teams, organizations and programs in seven categories:

  • Ignatian Leadership Institute Recognition (Student Leadership & Development, Ignatian Leadership Institute)
  • Ignatian Service Corps Recognition (Center for Service & Action)
  • Arete Awards (Center for Service & Action)
  • Registered Student Organization Awards (Student Leadership & Development, Leadership Programs)
  • Club Sports Awards (Campus Recreation)
  • Sorority & Fraternity Awards (Student Leadership & Development, Greek Life)
  • ASLMU’s Heart of a Lion Award (Associate Students of Loyola Marymount University)

As part of the ceremony, directors from each student life department presented their awards to the recipients — bringing together leadership and students from all experiences across the Division of Student Affairs to celebrate.

“I think the event was a huge success,” says Raamen Bass, assistant director for Campus Recreation. “It’s not always an easy task to bring together the ideas of groups that have their own traditions. Yet we were able to pull it off beautifully. It was an honor to have the Club Sports Program be included in the celebration of achievements of some of LMU’s best and brightest student leaders and organizations.”

There in lies the goal of the LMU EXP — to provide students a diverse scope of opportunities that inspire them to integrate knowledge with action so they become leaders that transform the world.
